A single crystal of chromium doped SrLaGaO4 has been grown by the Czoc
hralski method. The Cr3+ sites have been indentified on the basis of t
ime-resolved luminescence spectra and luminescence decay curves record
ed in the 5-300 K temperature region. One Cr3+ site in CrO6 octahedra
distorted by random distribution of Sr2+ and La3+ ions over sites with
C-4v symmetry is indicated by structural investigations. Instead, thr
ee distinct sites of Cr3+ ions situated in the low, medium and high cr
ystal field occur in the lattice of SrLaGaO4.
