Wh. Matthaeus et al., SPATIAL STRUCTURE AND FIELD-LINE DIFFUSION IN TRANSVERSE MAGNETIC TURBULENCE, Physical review letters, 75(11), 1995, pp. 2136-2139
We examine magnetic surfaces and randomization of field lines with flu
ctuations transverse to a uniform magnetic held. Analogy with passive
scalar transport in inviscid 2D flow provides realizations of magnetic
surfaces and motivates a nonperturbative statistical approach. The st
ochastic wandering of magnetic field lines leads to diffusive perpendi
cular transport. For two-component fluctuations, appropriate for solar
wind turbulence, the diffusion coefficient is a nonadditive combinati
on of slab and 2D coefficients, approaching the latter in the small am
plitude limit.
