Me. Starrels et al., INTERGENERATIONAL SOLIDARITY AND THE WORKPLACE - EMPLOYEES CAREGIVINGFOR THEIR PARENTS, Journal of marriage and the family, 57(3), 1995, pp. 751-762
This article utilizes the theoretical framework of intergenerational r
elations developed by Bengtson and his colleagues to examine parent ca
re performed by 958 employees in the Portland Oregon metropolitan area
. Analyses identify (a) the contribution of workplace factors to inter
generational functional solidarity, and (b) associations between funct
ional solidarity and interactions between workplace factors and employ
ee's gender. Several workplace factors showed main or interactive asso
ciations, some counterintuitive. Implications for the solidarity model
and directions for future research are discussed.
