Lh. Vandenberg et al., TREATMENT OF MULTIFOCAL MOTOR NEUROPATHY WITH HIGH-DOSE INTRAVENOUS IMMUNOGLOBULINS - A DOUBLE-BLIND, PLACEBO-CONTROLLED STUDY, Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, 59(3), 1995, pp. 248-252
The effect of high dose intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) treatment wa
s studied in six patients with multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN). All
patients responded to treatment (0.4 g/kg for five consecutive days) i
n an open trial. The effect of IVIg treatment was confirmed for each p
atient in a single patient, double blind, placebo controlled trial. Fo
ur patients received two IVIg treatments and two placebo treatments, a
nd two patients received one IVIg and one placebo treatment in a rando
mised order. Five out of six patients responded to IVIg but not to pla
cebo. One patient responded to IVIg in the same manner as to placebo t
reatment. Thus IVIg treatment can lead to improvement of muscle streng
th in patients with MMN.
