Inequities in social work salaries on the basis of gender are a stark
reality An analysis of the demographics of the full membership of the
National Association of Social Workers revealed that the salaries of w
omen social workers lagged significantly behind those of men, even whe
n age, experience, and function were controlled. The analysis found di
stinct salary differences based on the three primary functions perform
ed by practitioners with master of social work degrees: direct service
, supervision, and management. This article documents the extent of th
ese salary inequities within the context of the profession's long-stan
ding commitment to achieving equity and equality for women. Suggestion
s about how to address the problem of pay inequity are offered.
