A new thallium strontium cobaltite TlSr2CoO5 has been prepared by inte
raction of Tl2O3 with SrO and Sr2Co2O5 in gold tubes at 900 degrees C.
Actually the investigated sample is thallium deficient and can be for
mulated Tl1-deltaSr2Co1-tau3+Cotau4+O5-epsilon with delta congruent to
0.07, tau congruent to 0.05 and epsilon congruent to 0.07. The compou
nd undergoes a structural change at room temperature that is correlate
d with both a metal-insulator transition and a spin transition. The st
ructures of the high and low temperature phases are very close to that
of the tetragonal form of TlSr2CuO5.
