An X-ray structural investigation of Ph(2)PbCl(2)(DMSO)(2) (I), Ph(2)P
bCl(2)(HMPT)(2) (IT) and Ph(3)PbCl(HMPT) (III) was carried out (DMSO =
dimethylsulphoxide, HMPT = hexamethyltriamide phosphoric acid). Compl
exes I and II have octahedrally coordinated Pb-IV, but in III the coor
dination is trigonal-bipyramidal. Comparison with the analogous tin co
mpounds indicates the relative shortening of Pb-C bonds and lengthenin
g of Pb-Cl, Pb-N and Pb-O bonds. This phenomenon can be explained in t
erms of rehybridization of orbitals of the central atom.
