Abstract
A polarisation-multilevel scheme for improving the capacity and link l ength of soliton transmission systems is proposed. The soliton propert y of compensating for detrimental effects arising form large values of chromatic dispersion and polarisation mode dispersion, renders the me thod particularly suitable for upgrading transmission systems based on already installed standard dispersion fibres.
