Abstract
The coating of cermet cutting tools with various layer systems was per formed by the plasma-assisted chemical vapour deposition (PACVD) proce ss. Multilayers consisting of TiN, Ti(C,N) and TiC layers were deposit ed with various layer thicknesses and sequences. The structure, chemic al composition and hardness distribution of the layer systems were inv estigated. The hardness of the system is dependent on the top layer. M illing tests were performed to investigate the wear behaviour of coate d cermet tools. The capabilities of cermets can be influenced over a w ide range by PACVD coatings. By coating cermets with multilayers, the lifetime in milling experiments could be increased by almost a factor 2.
