Gel-electrophoretic analyses detected polymorphism of two waxy (Wx) pr
oteins, Wx-A1 and Wx-B1, in 334 accessions of the emmer group of tetra
ploid wheat, Triticum dicoccoides, T. dicoccum and T. durum. The null
allele for the Wx-A1 protein (Wx-A1b) was found in one accession of T.
dicoccoides and seven of T. dicoccum, but it was not present in those
T. durum accessions analysed. The null allele for the Wx-B1 protein (
Wx-B1b) did not occur in three emmer-wheat species. Wx-A1 and Wx-B1 pr
oteins showing alteration in mobility in SDS-PAGE gel or in isoelectri
c points were found in five accessions and considered to be the produc
ts of new alleles, Wx-A1d, Wx-A1e and/or Wx-B1d Densitometric analysis
of Wx protein bands revealed that Wx-A1 was present in smaller amount
s than Wx-B1 in almost all accessions.
