The Co-60 gamma-radiation-induced polymerization of CH2=CHSiMeCl(2) an
d CH2=CHSiMe(2)Cl has been studied. The resulting poly(vinylmethyldich
lorosilane) and poly(vinyldimethylchlorosilane) were reduced with LiAl
H4 to the respective polymeric silicon hydrides, PVSiMeH(2) and PVSiMe
(2)H, which were characterized by IR and H-1, C-13 and Si-29 NMR spect
roscopy and by GPC molecular weight determinations. A structure contai
ning [CH2CH(SiR(3))] and [CH2CH(SiR(3))-CH(SiR(3))CH2] repeat units an
d CH2=C(SiR(3)) end groups (R(3)Si=(CH3)H2Si and (CH3)(2)HSi) was dedu
ced. The chloroplatinic acid-catalyzed addition of oligomeric PVSiMe(2
)H to phenylacetylene gave an oligomer containing trans-PhCH=CHSiMe(2)
- and CH2=C(Ph)SiMe(2)- side chains.
