M. Viggiano et al., SACCHAROMYCES-BOULARDII FUNGEMIA IN A SEV ERE BURN PATIENT, Annales francaises d'anesthesie et de reanimation, 14(4), 1995, pp. 356-358
A case of Saccharomyces boulardii fungaemia in a burn patient is repor
ted. S. boulardii was administered in order to improve the digestive t
olerance to enteral nutrition. After a surgical procedure, a sepsis sy
ndrome occurred, with a white blood cell count increase, abdominal met
eorism and respiratory insufficiency, associated with seven blood cult
ures positive to S. boulardii. Digestive translocation of the yeast se
ems to be the most likely origin of this fungaemia. Some fungaemias fr
om S. boulardii have been published. However it is not usual to find s
uch severe clinical features as in our case which leads us to reconsid
er the therapeutic use of S. boulardii in situations including a gastr
ointestinal tract suffering.
