It is shown by an analysis of the results of neutron lifetime measurem
ents in JETP Lett. 57, 82 (1993) that one of the corrections-the corre
ction for leakage from the slit in the gate closing off the vessel sto
ring ultracold neutrons-must be positive. After this sign is reversed
and the errors are averaged over the temperatures, the neutron lifetim
e is found to be tau(beta)=887.6+/-2.3. Although this result is in bet
ter agreement with the value currently adopted for tau(beta), it is un
reliable because the scatter in the values obtained (the possible sour
ce for this scatter is not discussed) is almost two orders of magnitud
e greater than the systematic error indicated by the authors. (C) 1995
