Matched held processing (MFP) is a generalised procedure of array proc
essing used in ocean acoustics to localise sources. It is based on com
paring data with solutions to the wave equation using an assortment of
linear and non-linear methods. In essence, it is an inversion method
which systematically searches through forward solutions. Through simul
ation, the applicability of MFP techniques are examined to localise so
urces of vibration in structures. (C) 1997 Academic Press Limited
