Identification of familial relationships is essential for reconstructi
ng social structures in ancient societies. In forensic medicine, indiv
idual identification is occasionally also achieved by the same procedu
re. The paper discusses the role of odontologic traits for kinship ana
lysis as well as several statistical procedures helpful in the detecti
on and evaluation of presumptive 'genetic' relationships, and presents
examples of applications.
