A. Pedersen et al., THE FUNCTIONAL RELATION BETWEEN PARTIAL DISCHARGES AND INDUCED CHARGE, IEEE transactions on dielectrics and electrical insulation, 2(4), 1995, pp. 535-543
Analytical expressions are deduced for the quantitative evaluation of
the charge induced on an electrode by a partial discharge (PD) within
a dielectric body. Two approaches have been employed to effect this ev
aluation. These are characterized by the lambda function and the phi f
unction, and the essential relationships to be fulfilled by lambda and
phi are derived. The principal difference between these functions is
how the dielectric polarization is accounted for, either implicitly (l
ambda) or explicitly (phi) This difference is brought clearly into foc
us. Thereafter the application of these functions to PD studies is con
sidered. It is demonstrated quantitatively that perturbations in the d
ielectric polarization, brought about by the PD, can contribute signif
icantly to the magnitude of the induced charge. As a consequence, the
currently accepted approach to PD energy considerations should be re-e
xamined.
