Abstract
Guided wave optical switching has been in existence for well over a de cade and, at present, several architectures exist that could become ca ndidates for use in optical systems. This paper will review optical sp ace switching architectures, highlighting their performance parameters . Issues peculiar to optical implementation such as crosstalk, wavegui de interface losses and attenuation will be considered. A similar trea tment for optical time division switching will be presented in an acco mpanying paper.
