New dark blue ternary intercalation compounds have been synthesized by
heating graphite with liquid sodium in presence of a halide in the so
lid state. Sodium has intercalated with its chloride leading to compou
nds of stages 4 and 3, with its bromide to a third stage phase; sodium
and iodine cointercalation has led to second stage products often inv
olving a mixture of phases. The composition, structure, stability and
electrical resistivity of the products have been studied.
