Extractions of aromatic compounds from standard reference sediments we
re performed with a focused microwave (FMW) open-vessel system. The re
sults obtained show a good extraction efficiency (around 85%) when com
pared to the certified values and to the results obtained by conventio
nal Soxhlet extractions. The influence of the couple time/power is dis
cussed. The advantages of the FMW extraction technique for the recover
y of aromatic compounds include the small amount of solvent required f
or performing the extraction (a few dozens of millilitres) and the dra
stic decrease in the extraction time (t = 10 min).
