Since the very beginning of psychoanalysis there has been a long lasti
ng discussion about the definition and the role of symbols and symboli
sation within the theoretical framework of psychoanalysis. The discuss
ion has been summarized by Orban (1976) and Speidel (1978). In this pa
per a psychoanalytic understanding of creative processes and the relev
ance of symbolisation for the course of treatment is presented.
