The electrochemical reaction of the Fe2+/Fe3+ couple in high molecular
weight, solid, poly(ethylene oxide) has been studied. The kinetic par
ameters (including the electrochemical rate constant for charge transf
er) of the system under investigation have been obtained by employing
ac impedance measurements at ultramicroelectrodes (disk of 12.5 mu m r
adius). Ac impedance at a microelectrode has proved to be a powerful m
ethod with which to study redox reactions in solid polymer systems cha
racterised by low conductivity and diffusion coefficients.
