The stabilization of a beta much less than 1 plasma with respect to a
global flute mode m = 1 (the rigid mode: plasma being displaced as a w
hole) is shown to be possible if the plasma confined in an axisymmetri
c confinement system with a slightly rippled magnetic field has an ani
sotropic component. The necessary conditions for the magnetic-field ri
pple magnitude and the optimal location of rings formed by an anisotro
pic plasma are obtained. An example of a stability-ensuring magnetic-f
ield configuration is presented.
