This paper reports on distance relay application testing using simulat
ed transient waveforms. Power system modeling and test procedure for u
sing modem digital simulators are presented. Extensive study of five c
ommercial relays comparing the application for a 345kV transmission li
ne is carried out by performing thousands of one-terminal and synchron
ized two-terminal transient tests. The approach using digital simulato
rs has proved to be an efficient technique. This paper presents a meth
odology for evaluating distance relay transient performance based on e
xtensive laboratory testing. important issues regarding application te
sting, such as CT and CCVT effects and selection of prefault waveform
length, are also addressed and investigated in this paper.
