Abstract
This research compared family role dysfunction, college adjustment, ch emical dependence, and family functioning among a sample of 245 colleg e students from three groups: homes in which significant alcohol or ot her chemical abuse or dependence dysfunction existed; dysfunctional ho mes in which substance abuse was not a significant problem; and nonabu sing, nondysfunctional homes. The results suggest that chemical abuse or dependence in families is associated with slowed adult role assimil ation and increased risk for alcohol and other drug abuse among childr en.
