The authors studied the contribution of bacterial biofilm to the conta
mination of the dental unit water supply, as well as the effects of fl
ushing and sodium hypochlorite treatment on reducing the number of con
taminants. This study demonstrated that biofilm in the dental tubing w
as the primary source of contaminated water delivered by dental units.
