Multiply frequency-band-selective, self-refocusing, radiofrequency pul
ses were constructed to allow simultaneous, multislice imaging by the
use of phase encoding within each pulse. This approach has an inherent
signal-to-noise ratio advantage over the corresponding time-multiplex
ed, slice-by-slice experiment. Selective, refocusing, 180 degrees puls
es for the multiple excitations were also developed, allowing the expe
riments to be performed as a Hahn spin echo, Simultaneous, multislice
experiments with pulsed-gradient dow encoding were performed and the d
eveloping pipe flow from a perforated distributor plate was examined.
