A 10-year-old intact female German Wirehaired Pointer with abdominal d
istention underwent surgical removal of large, bilateral ovarian masse
s determined histologically to be dysgerminomas. Dysgerminomas are ova
rian tumors originating from undifferentiated primordial germ cells. O
varian tumors are one of several differential diagnoses to be consider
ed when the presenting signs are abdominal distention without peritone
al effusion. Conversely, abdominal distention is probably the most fre
quent presenting symptom of ovarian neoplasia.
