S. Scharfe et K. Elze, ENZOOTIC OCCURRENCE OF LAMB DYSENTERY IN 2 HERDS OF GOATS - CLOSTRIDIUM-PERFRINGENS TYPE-B ENTEROTOXEMIA, Praktische Tierarzt, 76(9), 1995, pp. 769
Clostridium perfringens type B-Enzootia are taken to deseribe clinical
symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of dysentery of lambs, specially of
goat lambs. Within a period of 8 to 10 days, approximately half of th
e new-born goats in the herds up to the age of 12 days died from gener
al anorexia going along with watery, yellow bloodstained diarrhoea. Af
ter pathological, bacteriological, viral and parasitological investiga
tions the diagnosis,Jambs dysentery'' was made. Clostridium perfringen
s Type-B was found to be the Pathogen responsible. At the beginning of
treatment the lambs were divided into 3 groups according to their age
. Oral antibiosis with penicillins and enrofloxacin apperaed to be adv
isable. We found out that any treatment of diseased animals in a progr
essive stadium almost failed. The use of antibiosis according to irrit
ability of clostridia is discussed in this paper. The importance of ge
neral hygiene in the shed and disinfection are specially emphasized. F
eeding colostral milk for at least 2 days is considered to be essentia
l. In large herds, vaccination of dams should be carried out as it is
done with lambs suffering from dysentery.
