Abstract
The reaction mechanism of benzoin condensation has been studied by usi ng the AM1 method. Three possible pathways have been investigated, one of which takes place via a biradical species and explains the experim ental observations such as the substituent effects and the fact that t he reaction can be carried out in non-polar solvents.
