Abstract
The principles and performance of coherent synthetic-aperture radar (S AR) are derived in a new and simple manner based on antenna reciprocit y. Noncoherent synthetic aperture antennas in radio astronomy are brie fly outlined. The anticlutter performance of SAR is analyzed. In addit ion, a distinction between translational and rotational inverse SAR (I SAR) is explained.
