The stabilization of Pt(II)-PbR(2)Cl linkages (R = Me, Ph) is reported
. The compounds of general formula [PtCl(PbR(2)Cl)(N-N)(olefin)] (N-N
= 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (dmphen) and 6-methylpyridine-2-phe
nylimine (pimpy)) have been obtained through the oxidative addition of
PbMe(2)Cl(2) and PbPh(2)Cl(2) to three-coordinate Pt(O) complexes [Pt
(N-N)(olefin)]. In the presence of less hindered N-N ligands (e.g., 2-
methyl-1,10-phenanthroline) the addition leads only to the isolation o
f the mononuclear Pt(LI) complexes [PtCl(R)(N-N)]. The molecular struc
ture of [PtCl(PbPh(2)Cl)(dmphen)(dimethyl maleate)] has shown that the
Pt-Pb bond is stabilized by an additional interaction of a carboxylat
e oxygen to the lead atom. The deplumbation product [PtCl(Ph)(dmphen)(
dimethyl maleate)] has also been characterized by X-ray crystallograph
y.
