P. Hubert et al., ANCHORING ORIENTATION OF NEMATIC AND SMECTIC-A LIQUID-CRYSTALS ON PTFE TREATED PLATES, Journal de physique. II, 5(9), 1995, pp. 1371-1383
The anchoring orientation of different liquid crystals in contact with
poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) treated surfaces is determined by me
ans of optical interferometry. The anchoring is found to be planar for
all the compounds tested, MBBA, 2OO6, 5CB and 7BPI, consisting of pol
ar and non-polar molecules, in the nematic or smectic A phase. This re
sult is consistent with the non-polar nature of PTFE, which is only se
nsitive to London-like interactions.
