In this paper, the preparation, spectroscopic characterization and opt
ical up-conversion properties of Tm3+-doped ZnCl2-based glass are pres
ented. The particular arrangement of the Tm3+ energy levels, combined
with the low phonon energy of the glass, yields two continuous two-pho
ton up-conversion processes from infrared light (795 nm) to blue (483
nm) and red (653 nm and 664 nm) light, and from red (707 nm) to ultrav
iolet (378 nm) light, respectively.
