The Diels-Alder reaction between methoxyfuran and dimethylacetylenedic
arboxylate, leading to a substituted oxanorbornadiene, has not yet bee
n studied in terms of its thermodynamic and kinetic properties, in ord
er to use this liquid phase reaction for storage and release of therma
l energy. Here, the reaction enthalpy and kinetic parameters are deter
mined by dynamic modelling which uses only the experimental temperatur
e of the reaction mixture versus time and the known kinetic law (secon
d order). NMR spectroscopy is used for structural identification of th
e adduct and for determining the relative ratio of reactants and produ
ct, allowing the kinetic constant to be obtained. Results obtained by
modelling are compared with those of other Diels-Alder reactions curre
ntly studied, This reaction has suitable thermodynamic and kinetic pro
perties for thermal energy storage and release. We discuss the conditi
ons of such an application.
