M. Bohringer et al., TRANSITION FROM 3-DIMENSIONAL TO 2-DIMENSIONAL FACETING OF AG(110) INDUCED BY CU-PHTHALOCYANINE, Physical review. B, Condensed matter, 55(3), 1997, pp. 1384-1387
At submonolayer coverages Cu-phthalocyanine (CuPc) induces faceting of
misoriented Ag(110) into three coexisting orientational phases. CuPc-
decorated kinks precipitate into an azimuthally rotated facet, while t
he interaction of CuPc with the remaining kink-depleted steps causes s
tep bunching in apolar transition. Local deviations from the CuPc-indu
ced equilibrium surface morphology are caused by kinetic constraints a
ttributed to the dominating interaction with kinks. At monolayer cover
age a rigid molecular superstructure prevents large scale mass transpo
rt and allows only for microfaceting.
