Communication: Polar liquid crystals with strongly positive dielectric
anisotropies are of continuing interest to the display industry becau
se they help to lower both the operating voltage and the total power c
onsumption of LCDs in portable devices. Fluorinated heterocyclic mater
ials (Figure, right, MG = mesogenic group) are shown here to exhibit i
mproved mesophase properties and higher dielectric and optical anisotr
opies than commonly used materials based on purely fluorine substitute
d moieties (Figure, left).
