Developmental stages resulting from inoculation of isolates and concen
trates of toxigenic Dinophysis norvegica are described. Similarities e
xist in the developmental stages of D. acuminata, D, acuta, D, pavilla
rdi and D. norvegica. Physical oceanographic mechanisms explain only t
he distribution of the cells in a red tide resulting from Dinophysis,
but not the biomass. However, sexual reproduction as a prerequisite ca
n account for the abundance of cells and therefore the formation of th
e red tide.
