Based on a fully coupled thermoporoelastic formulation, this paper dis
cusses the general conditions where the coupling should be maintained,
and where a partial or full decoupling technique may be applied. This
exercise is aimed at providing practical solutions for the coupled th
ermoporoelastic analyses where excessive manipulations and unreasonabl
e simplifications are minimized. The necessity for full coupling and t
he justification for decoupling are illustrated in a thermoporoelastic
application of a one-dimensional consolidation scenario. (C) 1997 by
