The Fourier-transform (FT) Raman spectra of genuine samples of scrimsh
aw are reported and compared with those of fake scrimshaw, ivory and h
uman milk tooth. The major spectral features in all systems examined w
ere assigned. The application of the FT-Raman technique to the non-des
tructive diagnostic identification of scrimshaw and simulated scrimsha
w artefacts is demonstrated.
