T. Inoue et al., DYNAMIC BIREFRINGENCE OF AMORPHOUS POLYOLEFINS .2. MEASUREMENTS ON POLYMERS CONTAINING 5-MEMBERED RING IN MAIN-CHAIN, Polymer Journal, 27(9), 1995, pp. 943-950
Five amorphous polymers are synthesized From five membered cyclic olef
ins to examine the strain-induced birefringence and viscoelasticity. T
he complex Young's modulus and the complex strain-optical ratio are me
asured from the rubbery plateau to the glassy zones of viscoelasticity
. The stress-optical coefficients in the rubbery plateau zone, C-R, of
the five polyolefins are all positive and very close to each other. T
his result means that the value of C-R is relatively insensitive to th
e details of molecular structure for this kind of polyolefins. The str
ess-optical coefficients in the glassy zone, C-G, of the four polyolef
ins which do not contain benzene rings are all negative and small numb
ers if compared with those of polymers with the benzene rings.
