The KIVA-II code was modified to allow calculation of the flowfields i
n a staged gas turbine combustor including the air-blast fuel nozzle.
The results illustrate the complicated flowfields present in staged co
mbustors. In particular, the thermal protection requirements of the qu
ick-quench mixer used in this study may be similar to those of the ric
h-burn combustor, despite the presence of the cool dilution jet. Varia
tion of the mass flow split between the fuel nozzle air passages has a
significant effect on the velocity and temperature profiles. In addit
ion, the slanted dilution slots form a counter-rotating flowfield. Fro
m the results obtained to date, it appears that the modified KIVA-II c
ode can be used to study the effects of various staged combustor desig
ns and operating conditions.
