Abstract
An approach to self-paced teaching and learning using a computer modul e, which is one of a suite produced by a consortium of seven UK univer sities, is described using the problem of investigating the spatial di stribution of ribwort plantain as an example. This provides the focus for learning about randomness, the Poisson distribution and goodness-o f-fit testing using the chi-square distribution.
