The effect of permanent hole burning is studied in the absorption spec
tra of quantum-sized CdS nanocrystals embedded in a polymeric film. Th
e prolonged UV irradiation of CdS particles with mean diameter of abou
t 3 nm and wide size distribution results in the formation of well-res
olved dips with full-width of about 100-120 meV at room temperature. T
he selected photoexcitation of appropriate QS CdS nanocrystals is foll
owed by their ionization and further irreversible oxidation of CdS pha
se by holes h(+).
