Abstract
This article develops an empirical relationship between the British Sm oke (BS) measurement, coefficient of haze (CoH), and Total Suspended P articulate Matter (TSP) for London winter periods of the early 1950s a nd 1960s. A bounded nonlinear model of form BS = TSP3/(TSP2 + [200 mu g/m(3)](2)) fits the available BS/TSP data and meets the urban boundar y conditions that BS --> 0 as TSP --> 0, and BS --> TSP as TSP --> inf inity. A derivation is presented for the form of the equation from bas ic principles. Equations of a similar form may be useful on a site- an d season-specific basis for developing relations between other fractio ns of PM.
