Abstract
A new and simplified formula for predicting the settling velocity of n atural sediment particles is developed. The formula proposes an explic it relationship between the particle Reynolds number and a dimensionle ss particle parameter. It is applicable to a wide range of Reynolds nu mbers from the Stokes flow to the turbulent regime. The proposed formu la has the highest degree of prediction accuracy when compared with ot her published formulas. It also agrees well with the widely used diagr ams and tables proposed by the U.S. Inter-Agency Committee in 1957.
