The effects of cefotaxime and ceftriaxone treatment on nasopharyngeal
carriage of Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) were prospectively stu
died with 53 children with invasive Hib disease. Nasopharyngeal aspira
tes were monitored during therapy. Hib was eliminated within 2 days in
92% of patients and was eliminated in all patients after the third da
y of antibiotic treatment.
