Abstract
The rpoB gene encodes the beta subunit of the DNA-dependent RNA polyme rase of bacteria. Mutations in defined areas result in resistance to r ifampin. Mycobacterium smegmatis is naturally resistant to rifampin, b ut analysis of the rpoB gene revealed no identifiable rifampin resista nce mutations. Another mechanism of resistance mag be present.
