The ligand polystyryl diphenylphosphine oxide (L) and several manganes
e(II) complexes with empirical formulae MnL(m)X(2) . nH(2)O and MnL(m)
SO(4) .3H2O (m=2, 3; n=1-4; X=Cl, Br, I, NCS, NO3) have been synthesis
ed and characterised. The absorption of sulfur dioxide by these comple
xes has been examined in the solid state, at room temperature and in t
he 230-30 degrees C temperature range, and also in SO2-saturated tolue
ne suspensions. After the interaction between sulfur dioxide and metal
lic complexes some air-stable SO2 adducts of accurate formulae could b
e isolated. Nitrate complexes appear to exhibit distinct behaviour due
to an additional reaction with SO2; viz. nitrate ions appear to be re
placed by sulfate ions in the SO2 adducts. Sulfur dioxide desorption w
as studied for SO2 adducts by heating at 160 degrees C under reduced p
ressure for 1 h or at 300 degrees C for about 15 min at atmospheric pr
essure.
