Scattering of a two-dimensional, spatially partially coherent electrom
agnetic field by a two-dimensionally-modulated microstructured medium
is treated exactly by means of the coherent-mode representation of the
cross-spectral density tenser and a rigorous diffraction theory for f
ully coherent fields. An explicit method of solution is provided for a
n isolated groove or slit in a perfectly conducting substrate. The res
ults demonstrate a significant impact of a reduced degree of spatial c
oherence an the radiant intensity of the field diffracted by such a mi
crostructure. The validity of results obtained on the basis of Kirchho
ff's boundary conditions is also assessed.
