A modified analysis of conical hems is presented that takes into accou
nt the true phase relationships between the feeding waveguide, the con
ical horn section, and the aperture phase variation. It is demonstrate
d that, especially for low-gain applications, an accurate account of t
he aperture phase error results in higher gains than those obtained by
widely used design methods-or that a slightly shorter horn is obtaine
d for identical gain specifications. Comparisons with measured data re
veal the advantage of this relatively simple analysis compared with te
chniques involving the conical waveguide mode spectrum. (C) 1995 John
